j-TXT - An open source Java application to send free text messages with your mobile phone.

How does it work?

Data is sent over the GPRS net instead of the telecommunications SMS network.

This makes it a lot cheaper as you only pay for the Internet charges that you are covered by your provider. You could probably send at least 1000 messages from j-TXT for the price of only one or two regular SMS messages.

j-TXT is programmed in J2ME Java MIDP1.0 and has a very easy to use interface. You just send messages to your contacts as it if were SMS and check for new ones in the 'Inbox' as if it were Email.

Why?

It works out a lot cheaper than using regular SMS, and just as cheap for international messages. If you TXT someone a lot or someone outside the country, j-TXT might be the solution for you.

How do I get started?

You just need a Java enabled cellphone with a GPRS connection. This should include almost any cellphone made in the last few years.

You need to register (free) a username and password, then download the application to your cellphone and configure it with that username and password. From there you can send messages to anyone else who also has installed the app (identified by their username).

· Free to download, free to use
· Small download size
· Tidy, easy to use interface
· Messages of up to 1000 characters
